About Laura J. O'Kane

  • O’Kane & McKee, LLP was founded by Ms. O’Kane with the philosophy of providing an interdisciplinary approach to addressing the needs of family business owners and individual clients to provide sound planning for her clients that meets their individual needs.
  • Ms. O’Kane’s predominate area of responsibility is the transactional side of the firm. Ms. O’Kane reviews the client's overall picture, from the protection of assets to issues of family harmony, and from discussing philanthropic goals to the client's tolerance for complexity and risk in tax and estate planning. By coordinating with the other members of the client's team of advisors, Ms. O’Kane is able to ensure her clients obtain answers that are integrated with her clients’ total personnel and financial plan.
  • Ms. O’Kane received her J.D. and her L.L.M. in Taxation and Business from the McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Santa Clara.

  • Counseled non-U.S. family on their U.S.-situs assets and on the implications of having younger generation family members residing within the U.S.
  • Planned and executed foreign inbound real estate transactions for commercial development financing. Planned and executed domestic commercial real estate purchases, lease agreements and financing transaction.

  • Reviewed family's asset protection structure, including insurance, trusts and other forms of ownership, geographic diversity, exempt assets, etc., to minimize family exposure.
  • Established multigenerational trust structure to keep assets within the family and protected from creditors.
  • Manage multistate estate and trust litigation to preserve family control of the closely-business.
  • Counseled branch of family to settle a family dispute instead of pursuing litigation to resolve the family issues regarding the family business.
